Su práctica como artista se ha caracterizado por establecer un puente entre el mundo del Arte y la  Ciencia,  generando cruces y encuentros entre el pensamiento científico y filosófico. De su profundo interés por la astronomía y las matemáticas surge la idea de "trama”, como la conexión de puntos sobre el espacio, una constelación y mapa del cielo trazado en la superficie de la tierra a través de sus recorridos. Su obra comienza con el reconocimiento de lo que ha sido descartado y desapercibido, y finalmente con la ética y la dignidad en la que cada uno de estos fragmentos recuperados del mundo vuelve a su presencia, transfigurado y reinterpretado por voluntad de la artista.

Sus viajes, pizarras, instalaciones y construcciones móviles, como una filosofía del mundo, un mapa mental y físico de experiencias, así como del estado y posición que ocupa el artista en el mundo y el Universo.

Licenciada en Arte de la Universidad Finis Terrae, Stgo, Chile, 2006. Dipomada en Cine y dirección de Fotografía de la Universidad de Chile, 2008. Entre 2009- 2012 reside en Nueva York profundizando sus estudios en The School of  Visual Arts y Lower East Side Printshop.

Recibe el Premio Arte para la ciencia, de la comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica CONICYT, Chile, 2013. EL Primer premio otorgado por la Red Europea de Arte y Ciencia en conjunto con Ars Electronica future Lab, Austria, 2015, con una doble residencia en los observatorios astronómicos de Chile y Europa. Ganadora del Prix Ars Electronica Award exhibiendo en Ars Electronica Festival, Austria y en los siete centros asociados a la red Europea cultural (Centro para la Promoción de la Ciencia, Serbia/ DIG Gallery, Eslovaquia/ Fundación Zaragoza Ciudad del Saber, España/ Kapelica Gallery, Kersnikova, Eslovenia/ GV Arte, Reino Unido/ Laboral, España/ Galería de Ciencia, Irlanda). Her practice as an artist has been characterized by establishing a bridge between the world of Art and Science, generating crosses and encounters between scientific and philosophical thought. Her deep interest in astronomy and mathematics, led to the idea of "Plot", visualizing it as the connection of points over space, a constellation and a map of the sky drawn on the surface of the Earth through its routes. Her work begins with the recognition of what has been discarded and unnoticed, and finally with the ethics and dignity in which each of these fragments, rescued from the world, return to their presence, transfigured and reinterpreted by the will of the artist.

Her travels, blackboards, installations and mobile constructions, show as a philosophy of the world, a mental and physical map of experiences, as well as the state and position that the artist occupies in the world and the Universe.

In 2006 she graduated in Art from the Finis Terrae University, in Santiago de Chile. She also graduated in Cinema and Photography Direction from the University of Chile, 2008. Between 2009-2012 she lived in New York, deepening her studies at The School of Visual Arts and Lower East Side Printshop.

She received the Art for science award, from the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research CONICYT, Chile, 2013. Also, she got the first prize awarded by the European Network of Art and Science in conjunction with Ars Electronica future Lab, Austria, 2015, with a double residence in the astronomical observatories of Chile and Europe. Winner of the Prix Ars Electronica Award exhibiting at the Ars Electronica Festival, Austria and at the seven centers associated to the European Cultural Network (Center for the Promotion of Science (Serbia), DIG Gallery (Slovakia), Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation (Spain), Kapelica Gallery (Kersnikova, Slovenia), GV Arte (United Kingdom), Labor (Spain), Science Gallery (Ireland). The Honor prize, Biennial Pilar Juncosa & Sothebys Award of Artistic Creation granted by Joan Miró Foundation, Spain, 2017 and the same year the XII MAVI/ BHP/ Minera Escondida Award, by the Museum of Visual Arts, Chile.

La obra de María Edwards surge del “Encuentro” tanto de las ideas como de las cosas, así como del espacio que divide y conecta el arte, la ciencia, la música y las matemáticas.

Recorriendo – Recolectando – Resignificando. Es en la repetición de sus hábitos, en el mantra cotidiano donde reside su búsqueda, haciendo un arte coherente con su manera de vivir.

Entrar al taller de María, así como en cada una de sus obras, es entrar a un mundo dentro del mundo,  en un espacio donde cada una de las cosas ahí dispuestas están en absoluto equilibrio las unas con las otras. Mapas, estrellas, piedras, huesos, plumas, ruedas, palos, viejos libros de física, mecánica, astronomía y partituras musicales, cajas y piezas de maquinarias en desuso están por todos lados, colgando del techo, flotando en el espacio, esparcidas en el suelo. Pequeños artilugios de carpintería llenos de ideas, todos y cada uno de esos hallazgos en su estado pleno, “cargados del peso del tiempo y de su levedad” -señala María- del respeto, de la muerte y de la mínima expresión de vida, de la sincronicidad y fidelidad a los propios impulsos que llevaron a la artista a arrastrarlos hasta allí desde donde fuese se encontraban. Todas esas partículas “sujetas a las reacciones en el espacio”, ¡vivas!, obras de arte “parcialmente” hechas por la mano del hombre, parcialmente cargadas de “algo más”, nacidas de la observación y el “encuentro” de María con el mundo y de su preciso trabajo de recolección y selección.

“Ejercicios de equilibrio y balance, búsqueda de elevación y prolongación de un gesto en el espacio y el tiempo” impulsos vitales, actos metafóricos de conexión definen su trabajo. “Construcciones que llegan hasta donde mi cuerpo pueda alcanzar, para desde al punto más alto dejar caer un hilo, una cuerda o bien suspender en el aire las piezas que tomarán su propio y constante movimiento ... Una obra que se pueda extender en el espacio respetando el vacío, proyectándose hacia la verticalidad, donde las líneas no van hacia ninguna parte más que a el espacio, perforaciones en el aire”, señala María.

Las travesías, pizarras, construcciones móviles, objetos encontrados, mesas de estudio y cuadernos de notas son una completa filosofía del mundo, un mapa mental y físico de experiencias, pero principalmente un mapa de lo indecible. Hay un fuerte elemento espiritual en la obra de María Edwards, que se identifica por su absoluta coherencia y trascendencia que comienza con el reconocimiento de lo que ha sido descartado y de lo que pasa desapercibido, y en última instancia con la ética y dignidad con la que cada una de estas fracciones del mundo son presentadas nuevamente en él.

María Edwards’ work arises from the "Encounter" between both ideas and things, and the space that divides and connects art, science, music and mathematics.

Recorriendo – Recolectando – Resignificando / Wandering – Collecting – Giving New Meaning). The repetition of her habits in the daily mantra is the essence of her search making an art that is coherent with her way of life.

Stepping into Edwards’ atelier or entering her works of art is akin to coming into a world within a world, a space in which each of the things contained there are in complete balance with each other. Maps, stars, stones, bones, feathers, wheels, sticks; old books on physics, mechanics and astronomy; music scores, boxes and parts of obsolete machinery are everywhere, hanging from the ceiling, floating in space, and scattered on the floor. Small carpentry gadgets full of ideas, each and every one of these findings in its full state, "loaded with the weight of time and their levity" -says María- about respect, death and life’s most minute form, about synchronicity and fidelity to the artist’s own impulses that led her to drag those objects to her workspace from wherever they were to be found. All those live! particles "subject to reactions in space", works of art "partially" made by the human hand, partially loaded with "something else", born of observation and the "encounter" between Edwards and the world, and her accurate work of recollection and selection.

“Exercises of balance, intents to elevate and extend a gesture in space and time” vital impulses, metaphoric acts of connection, all of them define her work. "Constructions that are as tall as my body can reach, and from there let it fall a rope or suspend in the air the pieces in their own constant movement"... "A work that can be extended in space while respecting the void, projecting towards verticality, where the lines do not go anywhere except to the space ... perforations in the air", says María.

Journeys, blackboards, mobile and constructions, found objects, study tables and notebooks are a complete philosophy of the world, a mental and physical map of the experiences, but mostly a map of the unspeakable. There is a strong spiritual element in the María Edwards’ work, that is identified by its absolute coherence and transcendence that begins with the recognition of what has been discarded and what goes unnoticed, and ultimately with the ethics and dignity with which each of these fractions of the world are reintroduced on it.
